Why can’t I claim housing benefit if live with my sister (UK only)?
My sister and her partner own a house however they have split up, and she needs me to move in with her or she will loose it. As she has a young son, she doesn’t want this to happen.
I am on a low income and if I moved in with anyone else I would beable to claim housing benefit, but as my sister owns the house it is unlikely I will be given anything.
It isn’t like im living with my parents who don’t even need the money, she is desperate for the money I can give her to be-able to survive, and it’s going to be a struggle for both of us to cope but for some reason the government seem to take a stern view on this.
Any thoughts or advice on my situation would be appreciated, should I just shut up and get on with it or do you think it’s a bit unfair?
Just to add that me and my sister are both in full time work in the financial sector, but as we are young and in training we are not on fantastic wages at the moment.
Im not sponging off anyone I pay more than my fair share of taxes.
I have plenty of ambition hence the reason I slog my guts out 3 evenings a week gaining a qualification, (which i’m paying for myself) to enable me to earn more later on in life. I’m not even claiming any sort of benefits at the moment and I was going to see if I could survive without it first.
Then again sod it i’ll claim them anyway just to p*ss you off. Thanks for your contribution.

You need to get you sister to draw up a tenancy agreement for you stating the amount of rent she wants for a room. Treat it as she is your landlady not your sister (i know she is and the benefits will know aswell) If you have been turned down appeal it. When I lived in a shared house two of the people I lived with claimed housing benefit. I can t see why there would be a problem good luck mate
Get in touch with your local CAB. I can’t see why you shouldn’t be able to claim benefit.
It may be possible to get housing benefit if you had a rent book. You can buy them in Smiths. Ask at CAB
Show more ambition and get a better paid job. Stop sponging off the taxpayer.
