Where can I find more info about the standard practice of conveyancing solicitors and if mine has done wrong?

conveyancing
My solicitor left the company half way through my house purchase. We were allocated another one by the firm who was unaware of basic details regarding our case. As if this wasn’t bad enough – THIS solicitor then left the company as well! The purchase is now complete but I feel I shouldn’t have to pay the full costs, as I did not receive a full service. 3 different solicitors who all didn’t seem to know what the last one had or had not done. Where can I find help on whether I am entitled to complain or not?

You may be 100% in the right and complain as much as you want, but solicitors do not give money back.

The law society protects solicitors, unless they do something really bad, but you cannot get any help from them.

Write it off as an experience and do it yourself next time.

When you first instructed your solicitor you should have received a Client Care/Terms and Conditions of Business letter and within this you should have been assigned a senior partner at the company who would take care of any complaints. Writing or phoning this partner should be your first step. A good reputation is very important to solicitors as alot of conveyancing work depends on word of mouth recommendations, so they will highly likely help you. If you chose a huge ‘tick box’ conveyancing firm who really dont care then The Law Society is your next step. You can go on The Law Society website and help is there.

That’s solicitors for you….since you’ve now got your house, if I were you I’d just concentrate on that. It’s unlikely you’ll get any compensation. If you like you could simply write a letter of complaint to one of the partners and see what happens.

Wasn’t Browns was it??! Next time, only go on recommendation to someone local to you – never use the cheapest. It’s always more trouble than it’s worth.
