Im pregnant, working and want to claim housing benefit, there are some questions id like to ask?
April 13th, 2010 by admin
Hi there, Im 20 years old and pregnant, i work 20 hours a week and earn up to £500 a month. At the moment i live with my mum, step dad who is disabled and sick and 3 year old sister, there is just not enough space for me there and once i have the baby it will be even worse. My fiance is on job seekers and is having a hard time finding a job, he lives with his parents and 3 siblings and also a dad that is disabled.
My questions are:
Do i need to find a place first before i claim housing benefit?
How much on average do you think i could get?
Do i need to pay the deposit for the place?
How many bedrooms would it be wise for me to look for? 2 or 1? (remember i have a baby on the way!)
Thank you in advance if you can answer these for me ![]()
Im in london, uk

Yes you need to find a place before you can claimHousing benefit. The amount of benefit you can get, depends on how much rent you have to pay,and if you are working or not.You may be able to get help with any deposit Etc. you will need to enquire about that with the housing benefit dept. The number of bedrooms you need would be 2.
your fiance should apply for the both of you as you are working more than the permitted 16 hours a week to claim benefits.
You are entitled to a one bedroom place until the baby is born then your entitlement is 2 bedrooms which is £650 where I live , but this varies from area to area
You need to find a place first and hand in your tenancy agreement to the housing benefit office but it is usual to pay a deposit to the landlord but yoou could come to an agreement with him or her
