Im pregnant, working and want to claim housing benefit, i have some questions id like to ask?

housing benefit claim

Hi there, Im 20 years old and pregnant, i work 20 hours a week and earn up to £500 a month. At the moment i live with my mum, step dad who is disabled and sick and 3 year old sister, there is just not enough space for me there and once i have the baby it will be even worse. My fiance is on job seekers and is having a hard time finding a job, he lives with his parents and 3 siblings and also a dad that is disabled.

My questions are:
Do i need to find a place first before i claim housing benefit?
How much on average do you think i could get?
Do i need to pay the deposit for the place?
How many bedrooms would it be wise for me to look for? 2 or 1? (remember i have a baby on the way!)

Thank you in advance if you can answer these for me :)

The first thing you have to do is register with your local housing association

Is this proposed house for you, your partner and baby

They will then tell you what the waiting list is like in your area
and how long you may have to wait for a suitable property

They will advise to size of property, then you can ask about relevant benefits
Hopefully though, your partner will have a job by then, and you won’t have to worry so much

Yes you need to find and be living in a place to claim but your council should give you a quote. Depending on earnings based on your circumstances you would probably get around 70-120 a week as a single parent and council tax benifit. You would have to pay deposit but may be able to get a loan from the ‘Rent Bond Sceme’. You will be entitled to a 2 bed property but if you get a 1 bed property it will be cheaper and sometimes you get yo keep the change!!!

    yes
    about 98% of the rental
depends on wether or not it is a private landlord, if it is then usually about a months rent up front will do it
at least 2 (babies and parents accumulate an awful lot of stuff/crap)

Yes you have to have a house before you can claim and the claim can take about 2 weeks.
They will give you the amount of you house, within resason they wont pay for a 3 bedroomed house if you only have 1 child and I think It would be about £60 pw + Council tax benefit.
There are places hat loan you the bonds who work alongside the council and carge no interest unless you go with a housing association on council.
They probably wont pay until you have the child.
You should say your parents have kicked you out and ask for a homeless meeting with the council. they will give you all the info. Apply to as many housing associations as you can and ask someone who pays full council tax if you can say you ae staying there. Make sure you are overcrowded. The council will want to put you in a B&B or temporary accomodation if you are willing to do that to get a council house you should only be in temp a few weeks!!

    Good luck!

the answers to yr questions are

    1. yes u need to find someone and u willneed to have at least one months rent in advance and deposit available

    2. how much u get depends on yr circumstances and how much u earn if u searh LHA rates it will tell u the rates yr local council pay and give u a calculator to work out what u can get. u wont get anything for baby till its born.

    3. yes that was answered in 1

    4. whatever u can afford u will not be eligible for housing benefit for the baby till its born.
