Doesn’t work like that, if you quite your job you will be under a benefit sanction period for at least two months and will not be able to claim any benefits at all. During this time you will be expected to pay for things yourself, regardless of if you have the money to do so. If on the other hand you lost your job through no fault of your own, benefits may be claimed as soon as reasonably possible.

You can claim Housing Benefit if:-

    * You are on Income Support, Job Seekers Allowance or Pension Credits (Guaranteed Element) or
    * You are on a low income

You cannot get Housing Benefit if:-

    * You, or your partner between you,(this now applies to same sex couples too) have more than £16,000 in savings (unless you have been awarded Pension Credits(Guaranteed Element) A partner is someone you are married to, or someone you live with as if you are married to them or same sex couples
    * You pay rent to a close relative who lives in the same home as you
    * You own the place where you live
