Claim housing benefit whilst at college?

I would like to go back to college to get more qualifications etc. Only problem is that my brother who i live with cant afford to pay rent and bills etc on is own without the help of my housing benefit. So i was wondering if i can still claim whilst at college?

Only if you go part time.

Do you mean… on top of your Grant?

If part time then yes, if full time then no. You are expected to pay for accomodation out of any grants or loans you receive or you should get a part time job. Easier said then done i realise but considering the majority of college students are 16-18 year olds there would be a severe problem of them all leaving home expecting housing benefit to fork the bill so they can have “freedom”. Not saying that is what you did but it would be a major problem if it was allowed.

If you are on JSA whilst at college (income based) or income support and studying part time (16 hours or less) then yes, you should still be able to claim benefit. But, that is also dependent on any grants you get whilst studying as these may be classed as income. The best thing you can do is contact your local authority and ask how it will affect your benefit – they may be able to use a benefits calculator to check any changes.
