Can the first time home buyers tax credit be offset to pay student loans?

My 2008 federal return was offset to pay off student loans..i then purchased a home and filed a 1040X ammended return to obtain the first time home buyers tax credit. Can this be offset as well?

    if you still owe then yes it will. Know this if in default it will be hard to get a mortgage from any lender so get it current

    Yes.

    You won’t receive a dime from the IRS until the student loans are brought out of default.

    Look at the bright side…..you now owe $8000 less.

    Yes. Your refund, however it comes to be, is subject to the Treasury Offset Program.

    Why would the loans offset your tax credit?

    If we could get FairTax bill passed, this nonsense would be a thing of the past.
