Can my mum claim Housing Benefit?

housing benefit claim

My mum was very kind and let my ex-husband and i take out a loan against her house. We used the money to try and set us up in a pub but this failed. I now am a single mum claiming Housing Benefit for myself and son. When my Mum tried to claim help with her mortgage payments she was told no as the loan was now classed as a Business one. What can we do??? Thanks .
Yes she was claiming before, and yes you can get help with your morgage payments. Forgot to say is is an OAP.

the only think is to try and sell the house, then buy another house cheaper in different area and make money.

I know that now you can sell cheaper but you also buy cheaper or rent and get housing benefit then.

Im pretty sure you cant claim it if you own the house, only if you are renting.

    Nothing you can do !

Your mothers is mortgaged – not rented – therefore she CANNOT claim housing benefit ! Housing benefit is paid towards RENT not mortgages ! The DSS will not fund house purchases !

Her only option would be to sell her house, pay off the outstanding mortgage (and YOUR loan !)

well to be fair no you dont have to sell the house, the government have a system called ISMI which stands for Income Support Mortgage Interest and the goverment will now pay up to £175,000 of interest only mortgage to ppl who cannot pay their mortgages for Genuine reasons. This did not used to cut in until you were about 8 months in arrears but since the credit crunch this has been brought forward to 3 months arrears to keep ppl in their homes
