Can I rent and live alone in my parents house and claim housing benefit?

My parents have moved to smaller accomodation due to illness, I am homeless at present although I did not live with them anyway, can I rent thier property and claim housing benefit as I am claiming jobseekers allowance and they have thier house to rent through an estate agent

    no. because your family and family are supposed to let you live there rent free. my brother wanted to rent to his brother but couldnt.

    Yes, it is possible but the housing benefit department have to be convinced it is a ‘proper commercial arrangement’ as opposed to an informal family arrangement set up in order to ‘take advantage of the benefits system’.
    The estate agent will presumably set you up a tenancy agreement which you will have to fall back on if the housing benefit department challenge you about renting from a family member.

    No. You cannot claim Housing Benefit if you rent from a relative. Even if you try to get round the rules like this, you will be found out. Don’t try it!!
