Can I claim housing benefit/rent if I’m 20 and still studying at college?
Right, I’m 20 years old and I decided to go back to sixth form college when I was 19 because I wanted to do something with my life! Not because I was dossing around up until then, I was travelling and working a lot!
Im studying A levels and live at home with my mum and step-dad and younger brother however I find it really hard to get on with them (not because Im a horrible person) I haven’t got on with my step-dad in 16 years! My mum is ok with me until he is around then she changes! I’m worried they are going to try and kick me out and I do not want to have to quicol legege as I am doing very well and thoroughly enjoy it!
I would like to have my own bedsit until i finish college and go to uni because I cant stand living at home, if anyone knoweatherther I can claim housing or rent for a place I would be very happy to know, or if anyone has been in the same situation and has any advice.
Any answers will be helpful, thanks!

There isnt any aid for living in an apartment- you will have to pay that out of pocket, and if you cant afford that, you will need to live on campus in a dorm (which financial aid will cover). Otherwise, if you dont wish to live on campus or cant afford an apartment- youll have to live at home you have no choice.
You will not be able to claim housing benefit while you are studying full time I’m afraid. You need to be on one of the other benefits such as job seekers or income support to get this – none of which you can claim whilst a full time student.
You can claim housing benefit and may be entitled to others. try website and fill in the form and it will tell you what your entitled to. enter the details of what the rent costs etc are likely to be. Really good website!
Unless you are disabled or a lone parent, full time students are unable to claim housing benefit. Sorry.
