hes got too many savings....and when you apply for HB they ask for a bank statement so theres no way he can conceal it. why doesnt he sign on with a job agency and at least get part time work that will start straight away?

Hi There

His savings are too high (need o be under £160000)
The only legal way to dump some of the money is to spend it on medical bills.
Tell him to go and have £2000 worth of cappings on his teeth, then he will be able to claim benefits.

Cheers

I would agree with the other respondents. Those savings are going to prohibit JSA and HB.

On the other hand a quick visit to the local Jobcentre to find out how things work could be time well spent if you can get to see someone who knows what they are talking about. There are some real numpties working in Jobcentres !

The local Citizens Advice Bureau would be a good port of call too, provided you can find one, and get seen during the very short times they are open.

I was unemployed for a few months last year, and was able to claim just over £50 a week JSA.

The downside is that Jobcentres are out of the same mould as police stations, hospitals and post offices - morbidly horrible places - and you are kept hanging around for ages for no apparent reason, so if it can be avoided, it should be. You get to observe some very odd behaviour.

I think he has to much in savings for housing benefit, I claimed a few months ago. I had found a job within 4 weeks, however the claim took 9 weeks to process before i got any money or housing benefit was paid. so as you can imagine for the 9 weeks i had to dip into premium bonds i had to bridge the gap.

I would say if he intends to go back to work asap then its not worth the hassle of all the form filling in for 9 weeks later to get £350 out of it.

call this number & ask
0845 608 8583

Depends which JSA he wants to claim

JSA(C) is for people who have worked for a period of 2 yrs +, paid into system & can therefore receive benefits for upto 6 months without savings taken into account

JSA(IB) if no entitlement to above because hasn't paid enough tax, wouldn't be entitled as Income Based(IB) & savings would rule him out.

Housing Benefits are processed by local council & believe the savings would rule him out on all counts.

Always best to apply, let the experts decide, especially if he has any loans with insurance etc as part of agreement for them to pay is he claims JSA

If he knew from the start he was only on a fixed term contract I don't think he would be able to claim. I also tend to think that his £18000 capital would be over the limit of allowable savings. A word of warning here, any attempt to give away part or all or to conceal the amount could be classed as a criminal offence. I am not100% sure of these facts but am going by past knowledge and I do not think that they will have been too far out today. My advice is to contact the local Jobcentre Plus
for your (and his) own peace of mind.I do hope he gets settled in a nice new job very soon - being unemployed is not happy making is it no matter why or how?
